The Problem:

A pervasive lack of access to quality and affordable primary health care services in rural and semi – urban  communities in Sub Saharan Africa.

Health facilities (health centers, personnel and medical equipment) are inadequate in the country, especially in the rural and semi-urban areas.

Conservative estimates suggest that four in ten people in Nigeria have no access to medical facilities or personnel. The distribution of healthcare workers is also skewed in favor of the major cities. This has led to worsening poor healthcare indices.

70% of the healthcare burden can be resolved at the primary care level but the reality on ground today however, is that primary healthcare delivery systems are practically non-existent.

The first level of healthcare provision and prevention of diseases is non – existent.  The implication of this is that patients and consumers of healthcare move to secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities.

In other words, the first level of healthcare provision and prevention of diseases has been rendered non-existent. The implication of this is that all the patients that could have been attended to at this level either move to the next level (the secondary level) or seek self-medication or rely on quacks.
